Over the past year or so, the gaming industry has been bombarded with music games. The front runner in this genre is Activision. Now get me wrong, I love Guitar Hero, but I think it is beginning to be a little much. It seems like every two months a new Guitar Hero, or band game comes out. Just in the past year there has been Guitar Hero World Tour, Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero 5, The Beatles Rock Band just to name a few. But now Activision is starting to go a little over board with it. Just 2 months after Guitar Hero 5 came out, they released Band Hero. The way I see it, this is Activisions plot to make more money. They are basically the same game, only with different songs. There is nothing new, so I honestly don't see the point in getting it. I was looking on Gamespot when I saw that they were also coming out with Guitar Hero Van Halen. Seriously Activision, seriously? I am not cutting these games down, I am sure they are fun, but it just seem like a bit much.
But Activision does not stop there. They released DJ Hero, which looks like the biggest waste of money I have ever seen. Half the songs I have never heard of, and the layout just look confusing. I know that you are not supposed to knock it until you try it, but I don't intended on spending over a hundred dollars on something that might be good. Now it could be worse, there could be Lego Rock Band or something. Oh wait, there is. I don't have much to say on that on that other than that is the funniest thing I have ever seen.
If you like Mass Effect, then you should love Dragon Age. This is Bioware's next installment to the gaming world. However, this game has a different look than Mass Effect as it deals more with mythical ideals, rather than futuristic. If I had to compare Dragon Age to something, it would have to be something along the lines of Oblivion, or maybe even Fable. But would this game capture the eyes of gamers? Here is my review.
Dragon Age is one of those games, where the storyline is the focus. You can tell that there was a lot of time spent on it as an astounding campaign. The characters are interesting and remarkable, and don't leave the gamer bored and wanting more. The story has enough twist and turns in it keep you guessing, and the fantasy world is graphically amazing. There are really not any drawbacks to Dragon Age. However this game probably wont appeal to you if you are not a RPG fan, in other words if you like shoot 'em up games, Dragon Age is not for you. Overall Dragon Age got an 8.5, this is good considering it was not initially going to be a blockbuster game.
The storyline is to long and broad to tell, so this is the short version. You get to choose your race and class, and this ultimately determines how the game plays, and ends. The land of Ferelden is full with creatures, monster, and characters that make the game challenging yet memorable. You are trying to rid your land of the beings called the Darkspawn. This game provides so many options that I could literally take up to 4 to 5 blogs just telling all the story lines the game offers. As I said before, this game is by the same people that brought us Mass Effect, so there is really no surprise why the game has so many options and endings.
I was at the mall, shopping and looking around, when I walked into a store called Gamefrog. This place is basically filled with big screen TVs, and every gaming console you could think of. It is not that expensive to play there, and you can use anything there for as long as you want. Well when I was leaving I noticed they were having a tournament in December for Halo 3. Halo had only been out for a few months, but I had played at every free moment I had during the day, so I had gotten pretty good at it. So, I played my $10 to enter, and went home and practiced. When the day actually came I was extremely nervous.
There were about 100 people there, all of which were just as good as me at Halo. The beginning of the tournament was 4 player free-for-all to 25 kills. The top player was taken from each round to continue in the tournament. I played 2 rounds and finished first in both of them easily, the closest any player got to me was 10 kills. This was done until the field was narrowed down to about 16 people. At this point I felt pretty good about my chances, there was only one person that I felt was better than me. But anyway, the tournament continued with one vs. one match ups to 15 kills.
The first round so to close for comfort. I was winning 13 to 8, when he started to make a comeback. I died 5 times in a row, but fortunately I came out the victor 15 to 13. The field kept getting smaller and smaller and I couldn't believe that I was still in the running. The next round was a piece of cake, winning easily over the guy. I wondered to myself how he had even made it that far. Now there was 4 people left. The next guy that I had to go against was the one guy that I feared could beat me. I was nervous, and wasn't not sure how I perform under this kind of pressure. The match was extremly close thorough out. It was a back and forth, heavyweight fight. It was 14 to 13, and I was losing. But luckily I picked up the sniper, and was able to get two headshots to finish him off, winning by one. I was really speechless when I won. Now with that guy out of the way, it felt like I really had a chance to win.
The last match was insane. There was two TVs back to back, with a crowd of people standing around. They introduced the finalist, and said where we were from. All I can remember was the guy's name was Jeremy, he had a few tournaments before, and was the local favorite. The match started off close, kill for kill, and then things took a turn for the worse. It was tied 10 to 10 and he got three kills in a row. I could feel the pressure in trying to perform well for the audience, and I think I let it get to me. I ended up losing 15 to 12, finishing second, and winning 75 dollars. To to bad for my first try, and this was just the beginning of my tournament career.
